County up from 71 last Thursday

POLK COUNTY—Polk County’s COVID-19 case count has jumped to 89 cases, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services on Monday afternoon.

The state had Polk’s count at 73 last Thursday, although Polk County’s numbers were at 71 as of last Thursday.

Polk County officials announced Monday it had an additional 14 cases, which put the county’s case count at 85 Monday. The NCDHHS had Polk’s case count on Tuesday afternoon at 89.

As of Monday, the state of North Carolina has now completed over 1 million tests and has 74,529 positive cases, according to the NCDHHS. That is over 10,000 more cases since last Wednesday in the state. Last Wednesday, July 1, North Carolina had 66,513 confirmed cases and 901 people hospitalized.

By Tuesday the state had 75,875 confirmed cases and 989 people hospitalized.

According to NCDHHS data, most of Polk County’s cases have been in the Tryon zip code. All of the county’s 4 deaths have been from the Saluda zip code, according to the NCDHHS. Tryon’s zip code has 29 cases; Saluda’s zip code has 23 cases; Columbus’ zip code has 23 cases and Mill Spring’s zip code has 17 cases, according to the NCDHHS.

Other nearby counties have also seen a jump in positive cases over the last few weeks. Buncombe County had 711 cases and 29 deaths as of Tuesday; Henderson County had 738 cases and 50 deaths; Rutherford County had 352 cases and 9 deaths and Transylvania County had 37 cases and 1 death.
