“Just a little pinch” the strange dentist said, aiming a Novocain needle the size of a Murder Hornet at my cringing mouth. Of course, when a strange dentist says OPEN WIDE, JUST A LITTLE PINCH!, the voices in my head are screaming “BITE, BITE those enemy fingers! BITE!”

That ‘little pinch’ is an out-right lie that no one falls for.

However, I restrained myself, and closed my eyes, trying to visualize a Caribbean blue sea and white sand somewhere far from the glaring fluorescent-lit cubicle. You really try to be a model patient, even if the truth is they’ve gotcha!–trapped in a chair, imprisoned by two people and tools.

By the time she said “Sorry for the little poke!” my hands were death-grip white, clenched along with my face: I’d decided that woman wouldn’t come near my mouth again once I escaped her evil clutches. Dentists and needles, and a tray of wicked-looking torture instruments are NOT anyone’s idea of fun.

However, during stay-home days, it was no-go for dental work—the clinic I usually go pretty much shut down. Naturally that’s when teeth/crowns break off, come out, splinter: things happen that should not be happening. So, I waited. If all else, I figured I’d get out Super-glue, duct tape and pliers, plus a shot of whiskey.

Over the years, there have been many dentists’ fingers in my mouth. I’ve never bit one (not once!), but for this particular dentist I wanted to make an exception. Some have a gentle, careful approach, even the Dr. Hurt I once went to. You can tell real quick who’s who when it comes to needles and mouth. I’ve got to go back for an extraction for the next round, but am glad to report they’ve booked me with a different dentist. It’s a good thing, because this time, I’d listen to the voices in my head if it was “Just A Little Poke” again.

The Saluda Tailgate Market’s opening is delayed until June.

The Saluda Arts Festival is canceled until next year.

Saluda Historic Depot & Museum reopens Memorial Day weekend (Friday and Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.). June hours will include Thursday as well. Face coverings, safe distancing and limits of people to 10 at a time will take place. The new Saluda Visitor Center will be open on Memorial Day weekend with the same schedule.
