Children’s Theater Festival cancelled for first time in 42 years
TRYON—For the first time in 42 years, Super Saturday has been cancelled because of the Coronavirus.
The Children’s Theater Festival Board met Thursday night and made the decision.
The festival was scheduled for March 21 in downtown Tryon, mainly along Melrose Avenue.
“This decision was made based on recent government recommendations regarding public gatherings and we feel it is the right decision for our community,” said the Children’s Theater Festival Board in a release.
Refunds on tickets will be given.
The schools will be sending order forms with payments back with students.
“Due to the governor’s recommendations about not holding public gatherings with 100 people or more, we felt as a board that it is in the best interest of our community to cancel our event for March,” said Super Saturday Chair Justin Lawrence.
Super Saturday usually brings 3,000-4,000 people to downtown Tryon every year for the festival.
The Children’s Theater Festival Board reached out to county officials for guidance for this year’s festival regarding the Coronavirus, or COVID-19. Polk County Health and Human Services Director Joshua Kennedy said the recommendation and guidance from state officials is to cancel/postpone/alter mass gatherings of 100 people or more.
“We want to thank all our sponsors and the wonderful members of the community who continue to support Super Saturday,” said Children’s Theater Festival Vice Chair Lindsay Lewis. “We are excited to present Super Saturday for many years to come.”
