On June 19, 1991, the Foothills Fire Commission was created by the Greenville County Council to provide
fire protection services for the owners of property adjacent to East and West Lakeshore Drive which
surrounds Lake Lanier. A governing board of 5 members was created at the same time. A contract was
made with the Tryon Fire Department to provide this service.
During the time since the inception of this contract, the recipients of this protection have received great
care by the Tryon Fire Department and its staff and volunteers. Most recent years, that care was guided
by Fire Chief Geoffrey Tennant. However, as many of you in the Tryon community are aware, Chief
Tennant suddenly died on July 19, 2019.
The Foothills Fire Commission members have decided that a memorial plaque should be placed at the
Tryon Fire Department station in his memory. For details about the plaque and its funding, please
contact Allen Smith at 828-899-0080 or email: asmith2812@aol.com. The deadline is March 31, 2020.
Chief Tennant has been missed and will be missed in the future. However, his assistant who had been
voted Best Firefighter in the area in 2018, James “Tank” Waters, as you are probably aware,
was named Fire Chief on July 26, 2019 and has continued providing fire protection services in an
outstanding manner.
