Polk Schools closed; several wrecks occurred
FOOTHILLS—No forecaster called for it, but on Friday morning, the area was blanketed with huge flakes of snow.
The temperatures stayed in the mid to high 30s Friday, so little to no accumulation occurred on the roads, but grasses, trees and cars were blanketed with snow.
Polk County as well as Lake Lure Classical Academy Schools closed early Friday.
There were several wrecks that occurred Friday as schools let out, with one being a 5-car collision on Highway 108 between Polk County High School and middle school, but no major injuries were reported.
It was the first snow this winter with little to no accumulation. Saluda received more than Polk County and Landrum.
The month of January received an above normal rainfall this year with 7.2 inches of rain. The normal for January is 5.1 inches, according to the National Weather Service.
After Friday’s surprise snow, temperatures hit 73 degrees in some areas on Monday afternoon. Temperatures are expected to stay in the 60s throughout the week with lows in the high 30s.
Temperatures will not be below freezing at least for the next week or so but there are predictions for thunderstorms and rain this Thursday.
