Lake Lanier Dam inspection beginning soon

LAKE LANIER—Town of Tryon officials plan to meet with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control soon to discuss requirements for the Lake Lanier Dam.

Tryon Town Council met last week and heard from town manager Zach Ollis. Ollis said he plans to meet with DEHC soon to talk about the dam. He also said he plans to travel to Augusta, Ga. soon to meet with the engineers to discuss the scope of the project.

Tryon recently hired Cranston Engineering out of Augusta, Ga. to do the inspection of the dam. The state of South Carolina is requiring an inspection.

Council agreed to hire Cranston Engineering last month, with the expected cost for the inspection being $239,000. Ollis said last month DHEC is willing to work with the town on the timing of the inspection.

The fees include the engineering and an underwater assessment, which will include lowering the lake four feet in order for engineers to assess the dam.

The Town of Tryon owns the lakebed of Lake Lanier and the dam, which is located just over the South Carolina line in Greenville County. The town uses the lake for its water source. The Lake Lanier dam was first constructed in 1924.
