35 Counties listed as Incipient

 

SPARTANBURG COUNTY—The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources has listed 35 out of 46 South Carolina counties in a state of minor drought. Spartanburg and Greenville Counties are among the 35 listed.

For the month of July so far, Spartanburg and Greenville counties have experienced an average temperature of 81.6 degree Fahrenheit. The highest temperature recorded for the month so far was 96 degrees Fahrenheit on July 2. 

With temperatures breaching 90 degrees Fahrenheit for most of the month,12 days this month have recorded temperatures above 90 degrees so far, the precipitation for the month has been minimal. According to the National Weather Service, Spartanburg and Greenville counties have only experienced 3.14 inches of precipitation in the month of July. 

Although the region has not been entirely without rain, the amount that has fallen is minimal. It has only rained more than one inch of precipitation at a time on once occasion this month. 

Compared to July of 2018, there is not much difference in the total rainfall. In July 2018 the reported precipitation was 4.35 inches, but the average temperature was significantly lower. In July of 2018 the average monthly temperature was 78.7 degrees Fahrenheit. 

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources will continually monitor the weather forecast and situation to determine if additional precautions are necessary.
