Advisory: Possible Raccoon Distemper

Published 11:36 pm Thursday, March 21, 2019

The Tryon Police Department and Polk County Animal Control have responded to two reports of raccoons acting strangely today – in the areas of Melrose Avenue Extension & Forest Lane. Animal Control had advised the raccoons may be suffering from distemper

Symptoms of distemper may include discharge from the nose and eyes, a rough coat of hair, emaciated appearance, and unusual behavior such as disorientation or wandering aimlessly. The animals’ symptoms become progressively worse and the disease is usually fatal. Distemper is not the same disease as rabies, although some symptoms are similar.

If you encounter a raccon exhibiting these symptoms – do not approach it, notify Polk County Animal Control.
