The Polk County History Museum recently posted this historical photo of the Steeplechase in the 1940s. The picture was taken on the now historic coach, which is located in the Polk County History Museum in Columbus. Then North Carolina Governor Joseph Melville Broughton was sitting on the back seat of the coach and Tryon equestrian developer Carter Brown was sitting on the front of the coach. Gov. Broughton was North Carolina’s 60th governor, serving from 1941-1945. He also served as a United States Senator briefly, from Jan. 3, 1949 until he died in office on March 6, 1949.
