Pam and Fred Herres are the 2019 inductees to the Second Wind Hall of Fame.

The Herres’ outstanding volunteerism for local nonprofits was recognized on January 22 at Tryon Arts and Crafts School’s Annual Dinner and Chili Cook-off event. On behalf of the Second Wind Board of Directors, Gail Muir presented the award to the Herreses before an audience of over 100 local community members.

While the Herreses have in some instances divided and conquered – such as Fred’s work for the Veterans Restoration Headquarters in Asheville, or Pam’s docent work for the Tryon Museum – they more often than not have worked as a dynamic duo, undertaking volunteer work in tandem with one another for the same institutions.

From 2013 to 2016, both volunteered for the Blue Ridge Barbeque Festival. Pam wore many hats, as Fred coordinated food vending and served on the festival Board of Directors.

For the Centennial Anniversary of Tryon Toymakers and Woodcarvers, Fred fabricated large wooden toy replicas, and Pam hand-painted figures for the event auction.

Since 2014, Pam has been a member of the Lanier Library Board of Directors. Currently, she is the Hospitality Chair, responsible for the library’s social and cultural events. Accordingly, Fred has volunteered for the library’s special events for four years.

Fred currently serves on Tryon Arts & Crafts School’s Board of Directors. In addition to volunteering for special events, he has been instrumental in recent capital projects, such as the construction of the forthcoming Shane Urquhart Metals and Glass Studio and the critical repair of the roof over TACS’ main building. Pam continues to be a key contributor to many projects at TACS, such the school’s Yard Sale, gallery reception volunteer coordinating, and participation in the aforementioned metals studio construction.

The Second Wind Hall of Fame recognizes Pam and Fred Herres, exemplary citizens whose passion, energy, and resilience have made lasting improvements to the quality of life of Tryon and the greater Western North Carolina region.

The Second Wind Hall of Fame is a 501(c)(3) organization that seeks to identify outstanding volunteers over the age of 60 who contribute to the quality of life in the community.
