Byron J. Brewer

Byron Joseph Brewer, 93, passed away Jan. 11, 2019, at St. Luke’s Hospital.

Byron was born in Stoughton, Wisconsin, to the late Will and Elsie Gullikson Brewer.

He moved to Chicago, Illinois, as a young boy, and later joined the Army as a medic, serving for two years during the last part of World War II as part of the army of occupation forces in Germany. Byron later graduated from Northwestern University with a bachelor’s degree in business. 

He married his wife, Betty, in 1951, and they moved to Tryon in 1953. Byron worked for Milliken for 35 years. 

As a member of Tryon Presbyterian Church, he served as an elder and sang in the choir for 65 years. Byron also sang in the Community Chorus from its inception until 2017 and was the treasurer and crew chief for Thermal Belt Habitat with 35 years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; son, Paul (Stacey); daughters, Emily (Rick), Lenore (Bruce) and Virginia Baird. Byron was blessed with five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Bill and Darrell Brewer.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, at Tryon Presbyterian Church.
