Polk County Middle School eighth-grader Angus Weaver earned a pair of awards Saturday during the 2018 Youth Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas game in Mathews.

Representing Polk County, Weaver earned defensive Most Valuable Player honors for the North Carolina squad. It marks the second straight year that Weaver has received the defensive MVP award at the event.

The South Carolina squad earned a 14-12 victory in the game.

Weaver also received the Rodney Brewington Eyes Award, becoming the first recipient of the award named for the former coach and current president of the Youth Shrine Bowl organization. 

The name of the award comes from Brewington’s coaching technique of yelling “Eyes” at players during practice. Players would response with a quick clap cadence and a verbal response.

The Brewington award is given to a player who pays attention to detail and exemplifies the ability of the player to give of themselves unselfishly for the betterment of the team and organization’s success. 

Weaver helped lead Polk County Middle to the Blue Ridge Athletic Conference football championship this past season.
