Polk County wrestlers squared off against some of the top wrestlers from three states during the Great Smoky Mountain Grapple, held Friday and Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville.

The competition featured wrestlers from 22 schools in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, competing in both varsity and junior varsity divisions.

Polk County’s Bryce Thompson enjoyed the best performance for the Wolverines, winning the 145-pound class in the junior varsity division. Thompson pinned all four of his opponents to take home the top spot.

Collier Foster scored a fourth-place finish in the 106-pound JV class.

Lane Smith, Brennan Worthington and Preston Burnett each had wins in the varsity competition.

Newton-Conover won the team Grapple title, finishing with 193.5 points to top Cherokee (177), Pisgah (156.5) and Robbinsville (149).

The Wolverines are scheduled to return to the mat on January 3, opening Western Highlands Conference competition with a home match against Avery. Matches are slated to begin at 6 p.m.
