It may take quite a while for any Polk County girls basketball squad to break the school record the Wolverines set Tuesday.

Polk County held Piedmont Charter to just three points, easily setting a new school low en route to a 65-3 victory over the Patriots in nonconference basketball action at Polk.

Piedmont Charter (1-8) had a basket at the 3:53 mark of the first period to make it a 5-2 game. Polk County (4-3) then scored the next 52 points in the game before the Patriots hit a free throw with 4:39 left in the fourth quarter. Much of the second half was played with a running clock.

The Wolverines broke the previous record of 11 points allowed set in a 2005 win over Thomas Jefferson. Polk County also surpassed the 60-point mark for the first time since a February 2017 win over Hendersonville.

It marked the first time since a Dec. 7 loss to East Henderson that Polk County had stepped onto the court against an opponent.

“We’ve been beating up each other in practice. We needed to get out on the court and play somebody other than ourselves,” said Polk County head coach Brandy Alm.

“We did a lot of good things. We started pushing the ball down court and ran our transition game well. We played some aggressive defense.”

Polk County finished with 23 steals, many of those leading to transition baskets.

Twelve different players scored for Polk County, with Marissa Twitty leading the way with 12 points. Tori Thompson and Sara Muse each had nine points, with Mariah Overholt scoring eight and Emmie McDowell adding seven.

Kristen Hall and Makalya Staley each finished with four, with Olivia Overholt adding three. Ansley Lynch, Rachael Davis and Amy Chupp each finished with two points.

McDowell had five steals and Hall had four while Twitty grabbed five rebounds.

“Hopefully this confidence will continue after Christmas,” Alm said. “We keep taking steps forward toward what we want to do.”

The Wolverines will return to the court on Jan. 3, traveling to Cherryville.
