New York City-based instillation artist Olek uses an unusual medium to get the art world’s attention crochet.

“I think crochet, the way I create it, is a metaphor for the complexity and interconnectedness of our body and its systems and psychology,” Olek said. “The connections are stronger as one fabric as opposed to separate strands, but, if you cut one, the whole thing will fall apart.”

Olek will discuss her artistic vision and current crochet project, “Love Across the USA,”during a free talk at Tryon Fine Arts Center at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

“Love Across the USA” is a nationwide public art project that highlights the accomplishments of women throughout U.S. history, and brings people together through workshops and installations. Each location features a massive crochet mural of a different woman: so far, portraits have included Susan B. Anthony, Harriet Tubman, Marian Anderson and Nina Simone.

“Nina Simone,” an 800-square-foot mural, was originally on display in Raleigh, and is now installed on the rear façade of Tryon Fine Arts Center in Nina Simone’s hometown of Tryon. The mural is on display through Nov. 28.
