Public blacksmithing demos to take place at Tryon Arts and Crafts School Saturday
Published 8:00 am Wednesday, August 22, 2018
Master metalworker Susan Hutchinson will present two blacksmithing demonstrations at Tryon Arts and Crafts School’s Shane Urquhart Metal Studio this Saturday.
Hutchinson has taught at TACS before, but comes to Tryon this time through North Carolina’s Association of Blacksmith Artists of North America. The Saturday event is a rare occasion, as the association’s six annual meetings are primarily in fixed locations throughout the state — this will be the group’s first ever meeting in Tryon.
In addition to learning about blacksmithing, the public will get a sneak peek at TACS’ Shane Urquhart Metal Studio expansion, named in memory of a young metalworker who got his start at TACS, though lost his life to leukemia in 2017.
The addition is a labor of love for the Urquhart family, TACS volunteers and regional supporters. Because equipment has not yet been installed, the public is welcome to watch the blacksmithing demonstrations under the shelter of the future welding area, which builders have brought to dry-in weatherproof status.
The schedule is as follows: 9 a.m., introduction and demonstration; lunch at noon; raffle; afternoon demonstration; conclusion by 4 p.m.
Coffee will be served in the morning, and water will be available all day.
The event is free of charge, and snacks from Tryon IGA will be available for all.
Raffle proceeds will go to NC ABANA’s Dean Taylor Memorial Scholarship Fund.
