As part of Tryon Arts & Crafts School’s “Crafts and Conversation” series, Anna Fariello will present “Southern Craft: A Revival in the Mountains.”
The presentation will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, at the school, 373 Harmon Field Road, Tryon.
The school developed this free public series to provide the community with insight into the rich Carolinian craft heritage, organizers said.
Fariello’s narrative begins in the late 1800s, when handmade craft practices accelerated in southern Appalachia. She will trace the craft revival into the 20th century.
The audience will learn the implications of craft on notions of tradition, regionalism, education and creative economy, and how aesthetic principles were tethered to the natural resources of the mountains.
Fariello will also show how present-day craft appreciation and heritage practices are rooted in the turn of the century revival, including reference to historic Tryon.
Anna Fariello is a curator, scholar and author specializing in Appalachian and Cherokee craft heritage. She previously served as associate professor at Western Carolina University’s Hunter Library, research fellow with the Smithsonian American Art Museum, field researcher for the Smithsonian Folklife Center, Fulbright fellow and Museology Specialist for the U.S. Fulbright Commission.
Among her many accolades, Fariello was a 2016 recipient of the North Carolina Preservation Consortium’s Preservation Excellence award.
