Published 8:00 am Wednesday, June 27, 2018

Pacolet Junior Appalachian Musicians Summer Camp will give kids ages 6 to 14 an opportunity to connect with music of the Appalachian region at Tryon Fine Arts Center.

Musical fellowship is at the heart of the program, with students learning traditional mountain tunes on the guitar, banjo, fiddle or mandolin with instruction by professional musicians. Ages 6 and 7 learn basic musical skills on the ukulele.

PacJAM summer camp also offers Appalachian folk tales, singing and dancing.

“PacJAM not only teaches a new generation of musicians the basic skills they need to perform, but the program also preserves an appreciation of the traditional music that’s been so central to our region’s culture.” said PacJAM Program Director Julie Moore.

PacJAM summer camp is held at Tryon Fine Arts Center from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Monday-Friday, July 16-20, with daily snacks and a camp T-shirt included.

The full week of group instruction will culminate in a public PacJAM student performance at noon on Friday, July 20, at Tryon Fine Arts Center. The community is invited to attend and support these aspiring young musicians and their instructors.

Registration is open now at tryonarts.org/pacjam or by calling 828-859-8322.
