Science club raises funds for trip, scholarships
COLUMBUS — Spring is the time for car washes.
The Polk County Early College Science Club held their first car wash fundraiser for the year last Friday. Advanced Auto Parts in Columbus donated the space and the water for the students.
Club President Taylor Warren said part of the proceeds from the car wash will go to fund the group’s coastal trip to Charleston in April. The funds will also be used for the club’s scholarship fund.
Warren said 17 students turned out to work the car wash Friday afternoon.
Early College English teacher Heather Wright was on hand as a faculty advisor. Wright said because the Early College School is small, they do not have a lot of clubs, but the ones they do have are very active.
“The money they raise here today doesn’t just go to the club,” Wright said. “They [the students] give a $100 scholarship to every graduating senior from the Early College program.”
Warren said though the minimum donation for a car wash was only $5, most of their customers were very generous in their donations. She added that the club will have another car wash in May to help raise funds for the senior scholarships.
