Lady Wolverines 11U basketball squad takes second in tourney

The Lady Wolverines Basketball Club 11U team captured second place in the Great Eight Tournament held March 17-18 in Spartanburg.

The Great Eight Tournament is one of the largest qualifying tournaments during the spring season, hosting more than 100 teams looking to earn a bid to the 2018 Teammate Basketball National Championship in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The Lady Wolverines fielded teams in three age groups during the tournament.

The 11U team included Bailey Staton, Brooklyn Twitty, Exziah Staley, Kynly Lawter, Mia Bradley, Tali Thompson, Taylor Collins, Brianna Gray, Sara Gray and Vanessa Raposa. Polk County High junior varsity coach Amber Thompson coached the squad.

The Lady Wolverines also fielded middle school and high school teams in the JV and Varsity divisions, each of which included teams from North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.

The Lady Wolverines middle school entry was led by Polk County High head coach Brandy Alm, and included eighth graders Sara Wilson, Olivia Overholt, Tori Thompson, Lauren Dotson, DeAsia Green and Julia Ridings, as well as sixth grader Caroline Taylor. The team placed third in pool play, but were eliminated in the opening round of bracket play.

The Lady Wolverines varsity squad, coached by PCHS boys assistant coach Brad Muse, included ninth graders Marissa Twitty, Savannah Parris, Emmie McDowell, Sara Muse, Kaylin Jenkins and Rachael Davis; and 11th graders Mariah Overholt, Jen Guerrero and Makayla Staley. The team also placed third in pool play and finished fourth overall.
