Polk County&squo;s natural beauty draws many artists to the area. This weekend take some time to refresh yourself with music and art inspired by all that surrounds us. This afternoon step into the Landrum Library from 5-7 p.m. and &dquo;Go Outside&dquo; for the opening reception of this exhibition of the area foothills, mountains, waterfalls and foxhunting. Erik Olsen has captured the majesty of the foxhunting community set amidst the scenic mountain photography of Klaus Karwath, Dr. Edith Hoffmann, Whitney Blake and Judy Cruse. But this isn&squo;t just a display of lovely pictures, maps pinpointing the location of the scenes around the area accompanied by fiction and non-fiction suggestions will help you to dig deep into the history of the surrounding area. The exhibit will be hanging in the Petty Community Room of Landrum Library from September 4-25 and is open to the public Tuesday through Friday 2-6 p.m. For additional information, call 864-266-2403 or foothillscal@aol.com. After your photographic adventure in Landrum, stop by the Melrose Inn in Tryon tonight to check out the Cajun Porch Pickin&squo; from 6:30-9:30 p.m. A flavorful buffet will feed the muse while local artists gather to share poetry, music and conversation. If you prefer to sit back and listen to one good storyteller, you might venture up to Saluda to catch the folk music of Chuck Brodsky at The Purple Onion. Friday the adventure again starts in Landrum at the Red Clover Gallery with an exclusive showing of Irene Hahn&39;s unique folk art celebrating the horse. While her she&squo;s making her artistic debut at 92 years young, this Camden artist has 90 years experience of close study with her subject across the country. You are invited to join the celebration with friends and meet the artist at an early&bsp;4 p.m. reception. For more information, please call the Red Clover Gallery at 864-457-3311. Then head into Tryon to join Tryon Painter&squo;s and Sculptors at Gallery II of the Tryon Fine Arts Center for the opening of &uot;Earth and Fire&uot; with two local sculptors;&bsp;Alice Bentivegna of Columbus, NC and Mary Ellen Wuerfel of Landrum, SC from 5-7 p.m.&bsp;Delight in the friendship and humor of the work they have created together. Then head upstairs to Gallery I for the 11th Biennial Juried Show also sponsored by Tryon Painters and Sculptors.&bsp; Regional artists in various mediums will be highlighted in this esteemed event. Both shows will run through October 2. But don&squo;t go home yet! At 7 p.m. catch Tryon&squo;s own Lone Derangers opening up the final Summer Tracks show at Rogers Park for the gritty country sweetheart Reagan Boggs. The sweet harmonies and wide repertoire of the Lone Derangers will set the stage with a solid Americana and rock blend. Then when multi-instrumentalist Boggs takes the stage you&squo;ll be swept from the bluegrass sounds of her southern coal mining Virginia childhood to the contemporary country of Nashville. Saturday take a trip to the country for the 10th Annual Green Creek Heritage Festival from 9 a.m. ‐ 4 p.m. at the Green Creek Community Center on Coxe Road in Green Creek. There you&squo;ll find antique cars, trucks, tractors, and farm equipment. Learn something new that&squo;s old with demonstrations all day in basket weaving, quilting, bee keeping, soap making, Pyatt herbs, stone polishing, spinning, blacksmithing, and more. Hear tales from storytellers Jim Hinsdale and Lance Smith. Kick back under the tent for a day of great local music from Phil and Gaye Johnson, The Basement Bunch, Southwind, Jennifer Prince, The Over the Hill Gang, The Green River Boys, and ending with the Anniversary Jam Session. Later in the evening you might head back across the county to Saluda where the Purple Onion gets jumping with Jackson Crossing at 8 p.m. You can dance the night away with local dance band Silver Travis at The Saluda Mountain Jamboree from 8 – 11 p.m.&bsp; For all schedules and info visit the website www.saludamountainjamboree.com or call 828-749-3676. Sunday catch the &uot;Walk & Talk&uot; tour of &uot;Space Shifters: Mountain Sculptors 2008&uot; featuring area sculptors in a variety of mediums at Upstairs Artspace at 2 p.m. Then relax from 6-8 p.m. with Music in the Field at Harmon Field. Heirs of Salvation and Dana Bergman will lead off the evening of music and invite you to sing along. If you would like to share your music at Harmon Field, please call 828-894-3370.
