City Council to consider annexation

LANDRUM – Landrum may be getting a new apartment complex on E. Rutherford St. During the February 13 city council meeting, the council will hear a first reading of an ordinance to annex almost 10 acres next to Maybry Motors at 1509 E. Rutherford.
“If the first reading passes, the council will schedule a special meeting before March first, for the second reading,” said Landrum City administrator, Rich Caplan Caplan. “They will also vote on zoning the property R3 which is multi-family use.”
Schaumber Development out of Greenville has placed a contract on the property and is planning a 49-unit family style apartment complex. The development will include four, two-story buildings and a playground area on the site.
“He’s [Drew Schaumber] built these projects in Charleston, Greenville and other South Carolina cities,” Caplan said.
According to Caplan, the development company had originally considered adding commercial spaces on the front of the building site, but determined, because of the slope in the back of the property, there would not be enough room for the apartment buildings near that location.
“The rear portion of the property will have a retention basin for runoff,” Caplan said.
The city council meeting will be held Tuesday, February 13 at 6 p.m. The council will convene at 5:15 at the Depot for their regular work session prior to the meeting, in order to consider locations for a potential railcar museum.
