Columbus approves new plaque at doughboy statue

The Town of Columbus is ordering a new plaque to be installed at the doughboy statue near the courthouse. Columbus Town Council met Sept. 28 and heard from Robert Williamson, with the Discover Columbus Committee, who said it will be a stainless steel plaque in black and white. The plaque will explain the 48-star flag placed at the statue by the county. The plaque will say, “The 48-star flag of the United States (1912-1959) continues to fly over this WWI Memorial Doughboy statue erected in 1920, in honor of the Polk County residents who fought and died for our Nation’s freedom from 1917 to 1918.”

The old water plant in Columbus has been demolished to make room for a new water storage tank. The next steps are to do soil testing and excavation. Columbus Town Council met Sept. 28 and heard from manager Tim Barth on the project. Barth said the state will likely give approval on the project in late November/early December and then the town can submit bids for the new water tank construction in January 2018 with construction likely beginning in February or March 2018.

Surveyors in Saluda are for water/sewer CIP

Saluda manager Jonathan Cannon told commissioners during a Monday, Oct. 9 meeting that surveying being done in town is for the city’s capital improvement plan for water and sewer projects. Cannon said the surveyors are about 90 percent complete with the next step being to submit state permits. Cannon said the city anticipates bidding out projects at the beginning of the year. The city is receiving an almost $2 million USDA loan to complete approximately 16 projects.

Saluda to replace nets and posts at tennis courts

The City of Saluda, which is responsible for the tennis courts at Saluda School, is replacing nets and posts, which are damaged and coming out of the ground. The City of Saluda met Oct. 9 and heard from city manager Jonathan Cannon, who said the nets and posts have been ordered. Cannon said the cost is $1,023.

Saluda has sent out final notices for tree trimming ordinance

Saluda manager Jonathan Cannon updated commissioners on Oct. 9 that final notices for those who have not paid their tree trimming compliance bills have been sent. There are currently 17 residents who have not paid, and the bills will go to a law firm for debt collection by the end of this month.
