It’s been more than a year since Polk County’s wrestling program last won a dual match.

Nights such as Tuesday show that the rejuvenated Wolverines are on the cusp of breaking that streak.

Polk County dropped a pair of narrow decisions in a home tri-match, falling 48-34 to Rosman and 51-30 to East Henderson. In each, changing the outcome of two matches could potentially have flipped the final score in Polk’s favor.

After a 2015-2016 season in which, due to forfeits caused by lack of wrestlers, Polk often lost the team score even before the match began, coming that close to a win this early in the season has brought new life to Wolverine wrestlers and coaches.

“We had our chances, but I’m not even disappointed,” said Polk County head coach Phillip Miller. “By the time we get to January, I think we’re going to be where we want to be.

“If we can weather the disappointment until then, I think we’re going to see some different results come January. Maybe even before then.”

Two Polk County wrestlers continued their solid early-season showings. Triston Watkins won both of his matches by pin at 113 pounds while Dillon Knighton earned pins in both of his matches at 152. Evan Miller also recorded two wins, one of those by forfeit.

Due to injuries, Polk County had to shuffle some of its upper weight classes and forfeited two matches against East Henderson. Flipping those two forfeits alone could lead to a different result on Saturday, when Polk County will again face East Henderson as part of the Eagle Duals tournament at East. The Wolverines will also wrestle Hardin Valley, Ga., T.C. Roberson and Franklin in pool play before taking on a fifth opponent to end the day.

“We’re going to be OK,” Miller said.
