This time of year, we are reminded to be thankful for our blessings and mindful of the needs of people who are less fortunate. In keeping with the spirit of the season, the Tryon Branch of the American Association of University Women is pleased to publicize that local resident, Jim Yamin, will give a talk at the next general meeting on Monday, Nov. 28 entitled “Mitigating not only the lack of affordable housing, but income inequality as well.”

Passionate about the need for all people to have decent, healthy, affordable housing since his college days in Boston, Jim Yamin will discuss how the federal housing tax credit program has been the enormously successful and pre-eminent resource responsible for the development of almost all the quality affordable rental housing in the United States over the last 30 years.

He will also emphasize how the program has had a major social policy component, enabling an enhanced degree of social mobility and the mitigation of income inequality among the population it serves. Of particular note, Jim stated that a disproportionate number of women, many single, head of household, benefit from this program.

With an impressive background in working with many communities to improve living conditions and develop affordable rental housing for low-to-moderate income populations, Mr. Yamin is currently president of Workforce Homestead, Inc., of Tryon, a company he founded to provide development and consulting in all phases of multifamily rental housing development. Many of the projects he has overseen from inception to completion are in both urban and rural areas of North Carolina.

AAUW invites the public to attend this meeting on Monday, Nov. 28, held at the Tryon Presbyterian Church at 1:30 p.m. Come hear this timely and important topic.
