Green Creek firefighters, who were initially assisted by firefighters from Columbus and Mill Spring, found smoke coming from the mobile home upon arrival. Initial search and rescue operations found Dixon in the living room near the front door, according to reports.

Dixon was removed from the residence by firefighters and transported by Polk County EMS to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where she later died of her injuries, according to fire reports.

Other agencies who responded included the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the Polk County Fire Marshal, Polk County Rescue Squad and Tryon Fire Department.

“We greatly appreciate the response from our other emergency agencies, and extend our condolences to the family,” said Green Creek Fire Chief Michael Herman. “With Fire Prevention Week approaching, we are all reminded of the importance of working smoke detectors and the fire departments in Polk County are able to provide smoke detectors to our residents.”

The investigation is ongoing, but the Green Creek Fire Department said the initial investigation appears to be accidental in nature. The initial investigation did reveal that there were no working smoke detectors in the home.

The fire is still being investigated by the Polk County Fire Marshal’s Office.
