Julia Munger Champlin died peacefully at her home in Millbrook, N.Y., on August 20, 2016. She was 90 years old. She was born February 5, 1926, in Manhattan, Kansas, the daughter of Harold Hawley Munger and Jane Green Munger. She was raised in Manhattan where her father was an engineering professor at Kansas State University.

She attended Kansas State until she met her husband, Arthur Doyle Champlin, Jr., at a dance at Fort Riley. They were married August 11, 1945. They had three sons: Arthur Doyle, III, of Pleasant Valley, N.Y.; Steven Munger of Washington, D.C.; and Jeffrey Fletcher of Fort Smith, AR.

Julia was a strong partner for her husband as he pursued his career in banking through three major moves; she then retired with him to Tryon, N.C. She encouraged her sons in their education, both by drawing on her bedrock Kansas schooling and, with her capacity to build strong relationships, organize, and lead, by becoming active and respected in school organizations and activities. She went on to take a deep interest in her sons’ careers; that same joy in her family and commitment to education and learning had a lasting impact on her three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur. She is survived by her three sons and her three grandsons, Luke, Andrew, and Christopher Champlin.

The family held private memorial services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Pacolet Area Conservancy, 850 N. Trade St, Tryon, NC, 28782.

Private burial services will be held in Providence, R.I. at a later date.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Allen Funeral Home, Millbrook, N.Y.
