This weekend, a group of students from Landrum High School will fly to Texas to compete in the 2016 USA Weightlifting National Youth Championships, held at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas from June 23-26.
This event will be the largest in history with over 700+ athletes from all over the country competing for international team spots, medals, and team national championships.
The USAW National Youth Championships is the premiere weightlifting event in the nation for athletes aged 17 years old and younger, and it typically attracts the most participants of any domestic weightlifting event worldwide. The three-day weightlifting event will be livestreamed.
Team Landrum consists of seven school members and one satellite member from Easley, S.C.
14/15: Reagan Bradley, 44kg Class; Sarah King, 48KG Class; Jessica Ravan, 53KG Class; Caitlyn Walker, 58kg class; Kaitlyn Painter, 69kg Class
16/17: Chloe Smith, 44kg Class; Kimberly Raber, 48kg Class; Anna Ringley, 75kg Class
Team Landrum member, Kim Raber, is in the mix for an international team member slot, which if she qualifies, will fly for Team USA to other countries around the world competing for this great nation.
Team Landrum has entered both a 16/17’s Team and an Overall Team for the team championships. They represent one of, if not the only, South Carolina high schools participating in this event. Most teams and members are coming from areas or facilities whose sole purpose is to produce Olympic athletes.
Landrum High School’s strength and conditioning coach, Chad Cooksey says, “Team Landrum is proud to be on the same stage as these competitors and is excited to show the country how hard Landrum has been working.”
