Mae V. Smith Scruggs

Mae Smith Scruggs, 91, of Tryon, N.C. passed away peacefully at Autumn Care of Wilmington, N.C. on April 8, 2015.
Mae was the owner of Mae Smith Draperies for 20 plus years in Tryon and was widely known for her excellent sewing skills in drapery and interior decorating. Prior to owning her own business she worked with Carolyn Hale of Tryon with The Red Bird Gift Shop. Mae was a devoted lifelong member of Tryon First Baptist Church where she served in various capacities throughout her 60+ years of service.
Mae was born in Rutherfordton, N.C. on May l8, 1923. She was the second oldest child of Boyd Gordon Vickers and Gladys Lee Vickers who had nine children. She was preceded in death by Euit D. Smith her husband of 53 years, and second husband R. B. Scruggs who were married for 16 years. Also preceding her death was one son, Gary Craig Smith.
Mae is survived by one daughter, Karen Thompson and husband Russ Thompson: nephew, Timothy Henderson and wife Sandy Henderson; five grandchildren; Adam Harrison Thompson, Sara Kathryn Thompson, Gary Craig Smith, II, Dawn Smith Connor, Sommer Clark and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Judy Erskine Miles and husband David Miles of North August, Ga.
Special recognition goes to three of her lifelong friends, Ms. Shirley Arledge, Ms. Miriam McClure and Ms. Marveta Stott. Mae truly loved those who cared for her during her declining years and a special thank you to recognize the exceptional care providers with White Oak Manor-Benson Hall in Tryon, the Kempton at Brightmore and Autumn Care Skilled Nursing in Wilmington as well as Clara Kuykendall and Dorothy Reid of the Tryon area.
A covered dish luncheon celebrating her life will be held Friday, April 10, 2015 in the Fellowship Hall of the Tryon First Baptist Church at 1 p.m.
Private graveside services will be in Polk Memorial Gardens, Columbus, N.C. Memorials may be made to Tryon First Baptist Church 125 Pacolet Street, Tryon, NC 28782.
