Tryon churchgoers may have heard several sirens during Easter Sunday service as the Tryon Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 70 Laurel Avenue.
The department was dispatched at 11:13 a.m., Sunday, April 5 with the caller reporting smoke in the residence and heat coming from the vents in the floor.
The Tryon Fire Department responded with two engines, its service truck and a tanker to the scene, according to Tryon Fire Chief Joey Davis. The Columbus Fire Department and Saluda Fire and Rescue also assisted.
Davis said when firefighters arrived they found smoke in the back bedroom so put firefighters on the main floor and in the crawl space.
“Our units in the crawl space found that the furnace was on fire near the motor and coil area,” Davis said. “Power was cut to the unit and extinguished with very little water.”
Davis said the furnace will need repairs but the house sustained minor damage overall.
“We certainly appreciate our mutual aid departments,” Davis said.
Davis said units were on scene approximately one hour before clearing.
