Sarah Eugenia Elliott Egerton of Columbus, N.C., passed away peacefully Saturday, March 7, 2015, at Tryon Estates, in Columbus, having blessed this earth for 101 years.

She was born September 6, 1913, in Coopers Gap Township, the daughter of Clarence Victor Elliott and Maude Eula Ruppe Elliott.  She graduated from Stearns High School in Columbus, N.C., in 1930.  She attended Brevard College and Cecil’s Business College before working for an orthodontist in Asheville for 35 years. While living in Asheville, she was a member of First Baptist Church, and was active in the Women’s Missionary Union and many other activities.

She married James P. Egerton on January 5, 1980, and moved to Mill Spring, N.C. She and James were active in community affairs, and attended Faith Baptist Church in Mill Spring.  James predeceased her in June 1996.

She was also preceded in death by her brother, David C. Elliott, in 1977.  She is survived by one nephew, John D. Elliott, and his wife, Betty Elliott, of Canton, N.C.

By her marriage to James Egerton, she embraced his entire family as her own, and is survived by her step-daughter, Sue C. Smith of Columbus, N.C., and a step son-in-law, William O. Parker of Charlotte, N.C. She was preceded in death by Thomas Nicholas Egerton and his wife, Juanita F. Egerton/Greer, Anita E. Parker, and Archie Hugh Smith.

She is also survived by five step-grandchildren: Thomas Nicholas Egerton, Jr., Anne Parker Croom, David Parker, Richard Hugh Howard-Smith, Steven Randolph Michalak; and preceded in death by James Broadus Egerton. She is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren, and many cousins.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 9, 2015 in Polk Memorial Gardens in Columbus, N.C., in the Egerton family plot.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Polk County Historical Society, Faith Baptist Church, or a charity of your choice.

A memorial service will be held at Tryon Estates at a later date to be announced.
