George R. Cashau

George Robert Cashau, 82, of Columbus, N.C., passed away peacefully on Nov. 7, 2014, at Tryon Estates. He and his wife, Claire, celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary in August. Raised in Phillipsburg N.J., he was the son of the late George W. and Mala Cashau.
A 1967 graduate of Lafayette College, he worked as a mechanical engineer for over 40 years, most of them associated with ANPA Research Institute in Easton, Penn. and ultimately became senior vice president/technology of the Newspaper Association of America (NAA) in Reston, Va.
After retiring in 1995, George and Claire moved to their dream home in Kitty Hawk, N.C., where they resided for nine years and where George continued to enjoy bridge, fishing and golf. He was president of Duck Woods Country Club from 2000-2002, and after moving to Tryon Estates in 2003, served several years on the board of Tryon Estates Residents Association, as president in 2008. He was an active member of Tryon Presbyterian Church.
His community service, sense of humor and compassion touched the lives of many and his greatest passion was bringing joy to his family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife, Claire, of Tryon Estates; a son, Jeffrey George Cashau (Vicki) of Wind Gap, Penn.; daughters, Susan E. Simmons (Jonathan) of Monroeville, N.J.; and Amy C. Lear, Newtown, Penn.; seven grandchildren: Nicole Santana (Jorge) of Flanders, N.J.; Anthony L. Martino, Jr. of Deptford, N.J.; Valerie Palmer (Jason) of Washington, D.C.; Patrick Martino of Turnersville, N.J.; James Simmons of Williamsburg, Va.; Collin Cashau of Wind Gap, Penn.; Gavin Cashau of Nazareth, Penn., and three great-grandchildren, Alina, Jocelyn and Cassidy.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. at Tryon Estates, 615 Laurel Lake Dr., Columbus. N.C.
