James David Ironside

James “Jimmy” Ironside, 83, of Landrum died on Sunday, July 27, 2014. He was the husband of Gale Bain Ironside.
Jimmy was born in Connecticut and spent his childhood in New York. He was a cattle farmer most of his life, beginning his career at various cattle farms in New York. After moving to South Carolina in the 1960s, he worked at Caroland Farm, owned by the Slater Family in Landrum, for over 40 years. Afterward, he continued working for Dave Slater at the Slater Turf Farm. He was co-founder of the South Carolina Junior Angus Association. Jimmy is known for his humility and his gentle and loving nature.
In addition to his wife, Jimmy is survived by his three children, Susan Whiten of Social Circle, Ga, James Ironside, Jr. of Gilbert, S.C., and Greg Ironside of Social Circle, Ga. He also has three step-children, Earl Bruce Omohundro of Inman, Kimberly Crater of Charlottesville, Va., and Kelly Agent of Ocean Springs, Miss. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Margery Bain Franklin of Landrum and ex-wife, Dottie Gippert of Monroe, Ga. Jimmy has three grandchildren and 10 step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and five step-great-grandchildren. Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, James and Jane Ironside, and his brother John “Jack” Ironside.
A memorial service will be on Thursday held at noon, July 31 at Jackson Grove United Methodist Church in Landrum near Caroland Farm.
