Big fun is coming to the Tryon Fine Arts Center (TFAC) Veh Stage on Thursday July 24 at 7 p.m., when Gerald Anderson and Spencer Strickland, Master Musicians and Luthiers, stop by to raise money for TFAC’s Pacolet JAM program.
Anderson and Strickland are in the area teaching an instrument-building workshop at Tryon Arts and Crafts. Also performing will be local talent: Bob and Amy Buckingham, New 5 Cents, and the Sweet Potato Pie Kids.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m., concert begins at 7 p.m. There will be a silent auction in the lobby starting at 6:30 p.m. to help raise funds for the local JAM program.
An instrument display showcasing some of the pieces built by Anderson and Strickland will be open for viewing in the Mahler Room at TFAC throughout the evening.
JAM stands for Junior Appalachian Musicians, a multi-state music program that introduces children to the music of their communities and their region, through small instruction in instruments common to the Appalachian Mountains.
Instrument instruction is augmented by vocal lessons, and string band classes provide children the opportunity to develop the skills to perform in small and large groups.
The affiliate program to be held at TFAC will be available for students in grades 4-6 starting in September.
Currently in over 20 locations in N.C., S.C. and Va., JAM, Inc. affiliates are providing access to the joy of music to hundreds of youth while instilling renewed interest and pride in their heritage.
Opened in 1969, TFAC provides opportunities and facilities for the entire Carolina Foothills community in order to advance experience and participation in the arts.
Admission to the Benefit Concert is by donations with all proceeds going to create scholarships for students to attend Pacolet JAM for the 2014-15 season.
