The Upstairs Artspace invites the public to a free art-film series beginning, Tuesday, July 22, with a screening of Painters Painting.
The well-regarded documentary offers footage of all the major figures of the New York Art Scene between 1940 and 1970, including William de Kooning, Jasper Johns, Robert Motherwell and Helen Frankenthaler talking about their work and the birth of Abstract Expressionism in America.
The film will start at 6:30 p.m., but the gallery’s doors will open at 6 p.m. so that visitors can gather for popcorn and conversation before the show.
The event is free, made possible through a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation under its Community Matters free event program.
The film series will continue through the summer and into the fall with screenings of documentaries and feature films on: Gaugin (Aug. 5); Picasso (Aug. 19); Rothko (Sept. 2); Pollock (Sept. 16); Joan Mitchell (Sept. 30); and Andy Warhol (Oct. 7). Art and the Mind, These Amazing Shadows and Who Gets to Call it Art? will be shown in Nov. and Dec.
The Upstairs Artspace is a non-profit art gallery whose mission is to develop an understanding and appreciation of contemporary art and craft forms through exhibits, programs and educational activities that enrich the cultural life of the region.
