Captain Marty L McGuinn of Sunny View Fire and Rescue was recently awarded one of two scholarships for $6,000 from the N.C. State Fire Association (NCSFA). These scholarships are awarded to the Eastern, Piedmont and Western regions of the state and are awarded to high school students who are dependents of firefighters, volunteer fire fighters and to career firefighters.
Each region receives two merit-based scholarships. Captain McGuinn received the Western Region Volunteer Firefighter Scholarship.
Eligible recipients must be active or retired members of the NCSFA. Recipients of the scholarship must seek a degree directly related to the fire service. The scholarship process is extremely competitive among Eastern, Piedmont and Western regions of our state according to the NCSFA.
Captain McGuinn graduated from Cleveland Community College in 2006 with an Associate degree in Fire Protection Technology. He plans to attend Columbia Southern University in Orange Beach Ala. through their online degree program.
Captain McGuinn will study fire administration. Captain McGuinn has served Sunny View Fire and Rescue for 25 years. He is also employed as a 911 telecommunicator for Polk County where he has worked for the last 18 years.
