Betty Jean McCord  Mosca, 91, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great -grandmother and friend passed away peacefully on June 19, 2014 at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, Landrum, S.C.
A long time resident of Tryon Estates, in Columbus, N.C., she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Col. Herbert Pratt Mosca, USMC (ret.), and her youngest son, Thomas McCord Mosca.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Carrey (Howard) of Ormand Beach, Fla; her son, Herbert P. Mosca ,III (Sara) of Denver, C.O.; daughter-in-law Lorraine Mosca of Columbus, N.C.; five grandchildren, Cara Bledsoe, Thomas Mosca, Courtney Mosca, Marisa D’Amico and Matthew Mosca and a great-grandson, Evan Bledsoe
Betty was born in Beaver Falls, Penn. in l928, the youngest of 5 children of Thomas McCord and Frances Cornelius McCord.
After graduating from Aspinwall High School, she graduated from Slippery Rock State Teachers with a degree in Physical Education and then completed her Masters Degree at Grove City College.
When l7, she was selected with 16 other girls from across the country to be a Miss l7, based on a IQ test, accomplishments and beauty, and was sent to Hollywood where she and the other girls were entertained by celebrities and the movie studios.
Before marriage, she taught Physical Education at the elementary and High School level. Her last two years of teaching were at Grove City College. She obtained her pilot’s license before marrying a Marine Corps Pilot, Herb Mosca after completing 100 hours of solo flight. She was an avid golfer, bridge player and loved to entertain her friends and family.
After her husband retired from the military, his job with Grumman Aerospace took them to Japan for five years, Hong Kong for three years and Singapore for several years. She was a member of the Tryon Presbyterian Church and a long-time volunteer at church, school and community endeavors.
Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2014 in the McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon, N.C.
Burial was in the Western N.C. Veterans Cemetery, Asheville, N.C.
