Bethany Hyder receives Buck Preston future writer award

Polk County Schools is honored to partner with Jean Preston and family to sponsor the “Buck Preston Future Writer Award” program for Polk County High students.
Phillip “Buck” Preston taught English for 42 years and retired from Polk County High School.
Buck Preston graduated from Wofford College and first taught English in Virginia for 10 years.
He then graduated from the Universty of Richmond with a masters degree in literature and later returned to his hometown of Tryon, where he taught for 30 years and finished his teaching career at Polk County High School after the consolidation.
Buck Preston impacted innumerable lives during his tenure as an English teacher and inspired many students to pursue writing creatively.
Buck Preston passed away in January 2013.
In order to honor the contributions Buck Preston made to Polk County High School and the many students he taught, Polk County Schools and the Preston family are excited to sponsor the annual Buck Preston Future Writer Award.
Students are encouraged to submit a creative writing piece to a panel of judges for consideration.
The student with the winning submission for the 2013-2014 academic year was Polk County High School Junior Bethany Hyder.
