Margaret Miller Bennett, 90, of Tryon, passed away at her home on Saturday, May 24, 2014. She was born in Evanston, Ill., the daughter of Charles C. and Thelma Blackwood Miller. She attended Purdue University where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. After graduation from Purdue, she worked her entire career for Abbott Laboratories as a Quality Assurance Manager until her retirement. Her only sibling, her brother, William, served in World War II and died in 1945. She and her husband, D. William “Bill” Bennett, had a hobby farm in Kenosha, Wisc. before moving to Tryon.
Maggie and Bill enjoyed traveling the world, with particular interest in remote areas and unspoiled ecosystems. They were committed to the protection of endangered wildlife and the preservation of wilderness parts of the world threatened by exploitation and development, such as the rain forests.
She was predeceased by her parents, brother and husband. She is survived by a number of devoted cousins, special friend, Janet Jamison of Columbus, and faithful caregivers, Janet Pack, Carmen Arledge, Michelle Lindsey, Carol Cumbie, Martha Ann Green and others who made it possible for Maggie to fulfill her wish to remain in her home.
At her request, there will be no local services. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, Inc., 130 Forest Glen Drive, Columbus, N.C. 28722 to further their mission of care.
