Robert “R.B.” Scruggs

Tryon, NC- Robert Bernice “R.B.” Scruggs, 93, died Saturday, March 8, 2014 in the Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills, Landrum, SC.
Born June 20, 1920 in Cowpens Battle Ground Community, SC he was the son of the late Robert and Bernice Martin Scruggs.
He was first married to Pauline Lawing Scruggs who died in 1996. He was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard and was the owner and operator of Andrew’s Furniture Co. in Tryon, N.C. for over 40 years.
A member of the Tryon First Baptist Church he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, chaired numerous committee, and was a member of the choir.  Mr. Scruggs was a member of the Tryon Federal Bank Board of Directors for 35 years having served as Vice-Chair.
He was also a former member of the Tryon Town Council, Tryon Chamber of Commerce, board member of Hospice, past President of Tryon Kiwanis Club, ast Chairman of the Tryon ABC Board, served on the Tryon Fire Department Fireman’s Relief Fund and was inducted into the Second Wind Hall of Fame.
Surviving are his wife Mae Smith Scruggs; his son, Robert, and daughter-in-law, Leta of Tryon, N.C.; his sister, Mrs. Marjorie Offerman Geller of Morehead City, NC; a special aunt, Mrs. Hester McGinnis, of Cowpens Battle Ground community; a special cousin, Mrs. Nancy Thompson Herman and her husband Tom of Links of Tryon.
He was also a special “PaPa” Scruggs to Aaron Lawson and his family of Canton, N.C.; and Mrs. Jennifer Lawson Picard and her family of South Hadley, Mass.
He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Joyce Briggs of Spartanburg, S.C. and Mrs. Mary Lawing of Hickory, N.C. as well as several cousins.  He was very affectionately known as “Uncle RB” to numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2014 in the Tryon First Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Harris and Dr. Darryl Maxwell officiating.  Music will be provided by Ms. Kay Green.
The family will receive friends just prior to the service from 1 – 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2014 in the Tryon First Baptist Church.
Burial will follow the service in Polk Memorial Garden.
Pallbearers will include: Aaron Lawson, Paquito Dona, Doug Morgan, Steve Morgan, David Briggs, Ed Lawing and Ellis Fincher, Jr.  Honorary pallbearers are: William H. Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Franklin McKaig, and the Board of Directors and employees of Tryon Federal Bank.
