Glassy Mountain Fire gains new board members

The Board of Commissioners of the Glassy Mountain Fire Service Area announced four newly elected members of the Glassy Mountain Fire Service Area 2014 Board of Commissioners.
The new members are Jewell Bayne, Richard Baker and William Brodie, all from Travelers Rest, and Dennis Geagan of Landrum.
The new members join David Vaughn and Dwight Hammack of Landrum and Dick Dusa of Travelers Rest.
Bayne was first elected to the Glassy Mountain Fire Service Area (GMFSA) Board of Commissioners in 1989 and served for 14 years. She was married to the late Bill Bayne, one of the original founders of the Glassy Mountain Fire Department.
Bayne is the owner operator of Jewell’s Barber and Hair Styling off Highway 25 North of Travelers Rest and is an Avon products consultant. She is a resident of Travelers Rest.
Following a career in corporate finance, Baker and his wife, Johanna, have been residents of the Cliffs Communities since 2006. He serves as a director and treasurer for the Cliffs Residents Outreach and a New York-based 501c3 foundation, Research to Prevent Blindness.
A resident of the GMFSA since 2002, after a career in sales and marketing management, Brodie is serving his second term as a commissioner, having served previously from 2007 through 2010, including two years as board chairman. He also served as a volunteer firefighter from 2008 to 2013. Brodie and his wife, Libby, reside in Travelers Rest.
Geagan and his wife, Claudia, retired to the Cliffs at Glassy in 1999 in Landrum following a career in a variety of manufacturing and sales positions.
In 2000, he joined the ranks of volunteer firefighter with the GMFD and he has served on the GMFSA Board of Commissioners for four years and as chairman for the past two years. Geagan has been an active recruiter and fundraiser for the GMFD.
The Glassy Mountain Fire Service Area was established in 1987 for the purpose of organizing a volunteer fire department to provide fire/safety protection and a first response emergency unit within the community.
The Glassy Mountain Fire Service Area covers almost 56 square miles with a population of 7,500 residents in the area known as The Dark Corner in northern Greenville County, which stretches from the east at the Spartanburg County line on Hwy. 14 to the west of Hwy. 25 and begins in the south near Hwy. 414 to the North Carolina state line.
The district operates five fire stations – Glassy Mountain (headquarters), Beaver Dam, Oak Grove, Dividing Water and Cliffs with about 50 volunteer firefighters and first responders.
