Fred Zust of Greenville, S.C. received rave reviews for his period-correct BMW café-racer at last year’s Tryon Rolling Art show.
Zust acquired his 1978 R100S as a trade-in at Touring Sport BMW.
“It was one of those bikes I didn’t want to take, but I thought it would be neat to make into a café-racer,” he recalls.
The original engine was completely rebuilt including a number of high-performance modifications.
It was then repositioned in the frame, higher for greater cornering clearance and farther forward for better weight distribution.
The frame, fork, steering head and swing arm pivot, and gas tank were redesigned for better balance and handling at speed.
The seat/tail, headlight, tachometer, exhaust pipes, shocks and brakes were also modified for racing application.
Prepared to compete in vintage races, the bike has won the “Best Engineered” award at the Airheads Invitational at the Barber Motorsports Park and everywhere it is shown, the crowds love its grace and simplicity of design.
This extraordinary motorcycle, along with many other rolling works of art (cars, motorcycles and trucks) will be displayed at the Rolling Art show on Palmer Street in Tryon on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Admission is free and so is exhibitor registration.
