Tryon Elementary School second-graders took a walking field trip Oct. 30, stopping by Lanier Library for a tour and a story before heading to the Tryon Fine Arts Center amphitheater for some reading of favorite stories in the autumn air. Some students dressed as their favorite storybook characters.

Vonda Krahn, the Lanier Library’s executive director, shared with students the library’s history as the oldest civic organization in Tryon and its connection to poet Sidney Lanier.

They were introduced to the children’s corner mascot, Sidney, the shaggy stuffed dog.
Lynn Montgomery, the library’s new assistant to the executive director, read the children a story as they sat in the Holden Reading Room where the library’s periodicals and reference materials are kept.

Afterwards the students were allowed to roam the library to look at artwork and objects on display.
They took home a bookmark as a memento of their visit.

The Lanier Library welcomes visitors during its open hours. Staff members will give a tour, share the library’s history and provide information about becoming a member.

A full-service library, Lanier is one of only 16 membership libraries remaining in the country and a notable part of Tryon’s history, having been in operation since 1890.
