Organic, sustainable and local cooking for budget

Published 5:12 pm Monday, March 11, 2013

If you want to save money by cooking and eating delicious, seasonal food from scratch and make a positive difference for yourself, your family and for your community, you are invited to attend the Wildly Affordable

Organic Cooking Class by cook and researcher Linda Watson.

Watson started the Cook for Good project after becoming obsessed with the national Food Stamp Challenge: living on a dollar a meal per person for a week. Her three-week experiment became a lifestyle, the website CookforGood.com, the book “Wildly Affordable Organic,” and now the Wildly Good Cook videos and teachers’ training program. She teaches cooking classes and gives talks on thrift, sustainability, and food justice across the country.

Go green for $5 a day or less with mostly organic or sustainably raised ingredients. Focus on cost to save even more. Either way, you’ll probably be spending less than the food-stamp allowance for someone with no other means. You can afford to eat wonderful food that is good for you and for your planet.

Polk County Extension Service is offering a Wildly Affordable Organic Cooking Class on Monday, March 25 at 2 p.m. at the Extension Service Building in Columbus. A small fee will be charged for the class, which will include samples of organic foods. Reserve your space by calling the Polk County Cooperative Extension Service at 894-8218. Space is limited.
