When the cast and fans of the classic show “The Dukes of Hazzard” gathered for the “Hazzard Homecoming” reunion on Aug. 11-12 in Washington, Va., local band Silver Travis was part of the entertainment.
John Gillie, who plays acoustic and electric guitar for the band, said, “This is one of the biggest [shows] we have ever done.”
In addition to Gillie, the band includes Randall Calvert, Rick Cash, Brad Durden, Joe Parrish and Mike Satterfield. The group originated in Spartanburg, S.C. in 1981 and played with numerous famous bands, including The Marshall Tucker Band, The Zac Brown Band and Artimus Pyle.
“Silver Travis is a little bit country and a whole lot of southern rock, with some good ol’ blues tossed in for a good measure,” Calvert, lead guitarist, said. “We are traditional southern music.”
Hazzard Homecoming was an event planned for the faithful fans of “The Dukes of Hazzard.” The whole cast attended the extravaganza, which included more than 50 replicas of the General Lee, the orange ‘69 Dodge Charger that was featured in the show. The homecoming included two days of rockabilly, country, bluegrass and gospel music.
“We [were] really excited to play there,” Gillie said. “[‘The Dukes of Hazzard’] was a big part of my childhood.”
Along with personal appearances and music, Hazzard Homecoming featured a Dukes stunt demonstration, the American BMX stunt team, fireworks and lots of activities for the kids.
