R. Bruce Kellogg, 81, of Landrum, died Monday, April 30 at the Smith Phayer Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills in Landrum.

Bruce was born in 1930 to Ernest and Helen (Hollowell) Kellogg of Chicago, Ill. (later of Landrum). He earned a bachelor’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Chicago in 1958. He was emeritus professor of mathematics at the University of Maryland, where he taught for several decades, with visiting appointments in Gotenberg (Sweden), Pavia (Italy) and elsewhere. Upon moving to Landrum with his wife, Mary Jo, in 2001, he continued his mathematical work as adjunct professor of mathematics at the University of South Carolina, Columbia.
Bruce enjoyed traveling, hiking with the Tuesday Hikers and visiting children and grandchildren. Bruce had a special love for Italy, which he visited often. He taught himself Italian and enjoyed reading Italian newspapers and novels. He continued to pursue mathematical research, speaking at universities around the world and publishing papers with colleagues in Italy, Ireland, Korea and China.
Bruce was married twice. The first marriage, to Claire (White), produced four children and ended in divorce. In 1990, he married Mary Jo (Walker) Wang, who was with him at his passing.
In addition to his wife, Mary Jo, Bruce is survived by a sister, Alice Gutkind of London, England; a daughter, Louise Kellogg, and her husband, Doug Neuhauser, of Vacaville, Calif.; a son, Gregory Tucker-Kellogg, his wife, Lisa, and their children, Louise and Nora, of Singapore, Singapore; a son, David Kellogg, his wife, Leigh, and their children, Thomas and Benjamin, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a stepson, Fritz Wang, his wife, Amy, and their children, Patrick, Jeremy, Max and Samantha; and a stepdaughter, Teresa Finlay, her husband, Matthew, and their children Walker, Oliver and Christian.
Bruce was preceded in death by his daughter, Renée.
