After much begging from my many friends and fans, I am pleased to return to writing my column in the Tryon Daily Bulletin, my all-time favorite newspaper. As usual, I have much to say, so thank you, TDB, for having me back.
Congratulations are in order to Foothills Humane Society and the community of Polk County. Maddie’s Fund’s No-Kill Communities blog is raving about us.
The blog begins, “We’ve all heard the claims that no-kill cannot work in the south, and especially not in the rural areas of the south. Polk County, N.C. disproves that completely.” They go on to talk about how terrific our shelter is and the outstanding Live Release Rate we have achieved.
This is something our entire community should celebrate and be proud of. Please make sure to show your appreciation to past and present board members, volunteers, staff and animal control for their above and beyond commitment to saving the lives of so many animals. Hoorah, and WOOF!
Our Live Release Rate (RR) for the year 2011 is indeed outstanding.  Once all the numbers were crunched, our LRR was a phenomenal 97 percent. This means that for every 100 shelter animals, 97 got new homes or went to rescue.
Five years ago, these numbers were just a pipe dream, but with the hard work and commitment of the FHS Board of Directors, shelter staff, volunteers, donors, animal control and friends, we have made this dream a reality.  I am so proud to be a part of this kind and humane community.
