Ag center envisioning fresh future for farmers, community

Being in business, one of the first things I did upon arriving in Tryon was check out the local chamber of commerce. Janet Sciacca, the executive director, impressed me from the start.

Her knowledge of the local business community and her enthusiasm for helping all businesses, regardless of size, is impressive.

To help business people make connections chambers hold after-hours get-togethers at different local businesses. I find the after-hours a great way to meet other business people in a relaxed atmosphere.

Often you also get a “behind the scenes” look into the various locations and their way of doing business.

April 26 the Carolina Foothills Chamber of Commerce held its after hours event at the Mill Spring Agriculture Development Center.

I have heard a lot about the center, as we’ve covered it in the Bulletin, but this was my first time actually visiting the center.

Dave Slater, the Polk County Soil and Water District Supervisor, was kind enough to give me a tour.

The former school building is now owned by Polk County Soil and Water and is managed by Polk Agricultural Economic Development. Through the efforts of many – federal grants, generous donations and countless hours of work from volunteers – the building now houses their offices along with conference rooms and many businesses.

The recently opened Polk Fresh Trade Post sells local products such as organic chicken, fresh farm eggs, fresh baked bread, buffalo meat and more.

The center’s vision is to enhance community spirit and quality of life by working with farmers, local businesses and individual citizens to promote the sustainable economic growth and rural character of Polk County.

I’d have to say they are well on their way to success. You won’t find a better example of government, business and individuals coming together for the common good of the community than the Mill Spring Ag Center.
