A new day dawned Wednesday for Polk County athletics.

A hot one, too.

Wolverine teams greeted the official start of the fall season with practices throughout the PCHS campus. The beginning of the 2025-26 athletic year means Polk County is now officially a 3A school and competing once again in the Western Highlands Conference, returning to its longtime home after four years in the now-defunct Mountain Foothills 7 Conference.

Among those working out Wednesday morning were Polk County’s football program, girls tennis team and the Wolverine volleyball squad, holding two sessions of tryouts to start the work of replacing six seniors from last season’s state 1A champions.

Polk’s boys soccer team hit the field for the first time Wednesday evening.

Those teams, plus Wolverine cross country and girls golf teams, will continue working out and building toward the start of the regular season, with the first event set for Aug. 12.
