COLUMBUS—The Polk County NC Co-Op Extension Office has launched an informative new podcast titled “The Extension Connection,” designed to provide valuable resources and expert advice to listeners in the community and beyond. Each episode covers a wide range of topics, including 4-H youth development, family and consumer sciences, equine, livestock and horticulture.

Listeners can look forward to at least three new episodes released every month on Wednesdays, with each week featuring a different subject matter expert from the Extension Office. The podcast aims to deliver practical insights, local resources, and research-based information that can benefit residents in their everyday lives.

Family and Consumer Science Extension Agent Lindsey Edwards explained that each episode is hosted by different agents within the office, ensuring a diverse array of topics and expertise.

“The first Wednesday of every month, I do one episode, the second Wednesday features another agent, and the third typically highlights different aspects of our services,” she said.

The podcast effectively condenses large amounts of information into accessible discussions. Topics vary widely, from agricultural practices to family well-being, all underpinned by research-based resources.

“We’re striving to provide helpful information that meets the needs of our community,” Edwards emphasized.

Interestingly, the Polk County Extension Office is reportedly one of the first in North Carolina to adopt this multi-agent model for a podcast. Edwards shared that this approach sets them apart and allows for a collaborative sharing of knowledge that is innovative within the extension system.

Listeners can enjoy “The Extension Connection” on popular platforms, including Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify, making it accessible for those listening while working, gardening, or managing household tasks. Edwards mentioned that the podcast has already reached audiences far beyond Polk County, with downloads from places like Frankfurt, Germany, emphasizing the universal appeal of the topics discussed.

As the podcast grows, Edwards is excited about the potential for increasing outreach and engagement with new listeners.

“It’s a great way to provide a wealth of information quickly and effectively,” she said. “As we continue to build content, we hope more people find us and tune in.”
